A favorite Stricklands story doesn't really belong to me, but to my husband, John. He was 15 at the time, and had just sneaked into the Rubber Bowl to play football with about 10-15 of his friends. It didn't take long for the police to be notified, and they promptly came to the Rubber Bowl and arrested all of the boys. They were put into the back of the paddy wagon, and were told they would have to call their parents to come get them. Before taking the boys to the police station, the policemen made a stop at Stricklands to have a custard!! It was a hot, summer day, and the 10-15 boys in the back of the paddy wagon had to sit in the heat while the policemen ate their cones!

Although I was born in Los Angeles, my father was from Ohio, and moved us back to his hometown of Uniontown in the 1960's, when I was 7 years old. My dad loves to tell stories, and he told stories of the Amish horse and buggies, ice skating on Mogadore Lake, and best of all, the wonderful, creamy ice cream at the bottom of the Soap Box Derby hill in Akron. My little brother and I could hardly wait to try it, and we were not disappointed. After eating Strickland's ice cream my father could tell us stories about anything and we would believe him!!! (My favofites were Dewberry and Fresh Peach). For the nest 8 years, Strickland's was the place we went to celebrate a good report card, after a baseball game, really for any special family event. When I was 14, we moved back to Los Angeles, and for years I've told my own kids, now 17, 19 & 26 that they don't know what good ice cream is because they've never tasted Strickland's!!
I was recently in touch with an old friend in Ohio that told me Strickland's had opened up a store in Irvine....not too far from me!! I got online to check it out, and sure enough, there it is......this weekend I'll be taking my boys to Strickland's for a special treat so that they can't taste a special part of my childhood!! I can hardly wait........

My dad use to always take me and my brothers to Stricklands and it was a tradition to go down baker hill a few roads down from Stricklands. I really don't know if it's called baker hill but its a REALLY long steep road. Anyways my dad would break check us at just the right moment with the cone to our mouths and yes, it would get all over our face. he got a kick out of it everytime.
my favorite flavor...GRAPE!! :)

When i was a kid, (a long time ago), i saved my pennys, and when i had a buck, i would ride my bike the one mile from my house on penthley, i would get a 25cent large cone a 15cent medium cone and a 10 cent small cone, oh, you could get a childs cone for a nickel, i would spend the whole dollar and go home a little sick, but as happy as i have ever been. i still stop by every chance i get. my fav is grape!!!!!

My mom grew up here and I remember being 6 years old eating at Strickland's. We don't have ice cream like this in CA. (Well, OK the Internet shows one in Irvine, CA but it can't be the same, I'll check it out when I get home). It's been 42 years since that last visit to Strickland's - I'm on my way there now with my 5 year old. Can't wait!!!!!
